Highlights this week:
This is a day book. It's not all that well edited. I try to keep this up daily, but sometimes I can't. I'll keep trying. See also the monthly COMPUTING AT CHAOS MANOR column, 4,000 - 7,000 words, depending. (Older columns here.) For more on what this page is about, please go to the VIEW PAGE. March 15, 2004 The Ides of March Stefan Possony's birthday. Off to take a walk. As usual there is mail over the weekend. We also have considerable new mail today. The Spanish election was a bit of a surprise but not astonishing. The world turns. An apology: I have been spelling it 'maiastas' when it ought to have been spelled 'maiestas'; comes of failing memory. Caligula made himself popular when he abolished the maiestas laws of Augustus and Tiberius. Of course they were restored. Empires need them. On another subject: Brad Linaweaver asked for and was granted

Mostly cleaning up. I have some notions for fiction, and I'm making notes. Sable and I went up the hill today, 5 mile round trip, about 800 feet elevation. She's full of energy again. I'm all worn out.

March 17, 2004 St. Patrick's Day Heard this morning there was a huge explosion in Baghdad. Just received a message from Dr. Jennifer Pournelle who is in Iraq helping reconstitute their national university. She's all right and wasn't in Baghdad at the time. More, perhaps with pictures, when she's better settled.
I am doing a new map for BURNING TOWER which will be the sequel to THE BURNING CITY (note: The Burning City is a city. Burning Tower is a girl's name.) I don't know the schedule on Burning City yet, but it is going into production. I seem to have bogged down on doing proofs for the new edition of A STEP FARTHER OUT and I'll get back to that shortly. I knew him well enough to have dinner with him a few times. He directed JPL during the glory days, and I first met Arthur Clarke in his company during one of the planetary encounters. More is in his official biography.

March 19, 2004 A discouraging word. Only I always get discouraged when on the road. Down at the beach. Usual communications problems. Earthlink won't let me send except through earthlink (they used to have an authorization server but apparently it doesn't work any longer). Everything gets choked up and Outlook 2003 simply can't stand it if I put the outlook.pst file anywhere but where it wants it.
I am trying a Belkin wireless keyboard and mouse. The wireless works, the key feel is good, the backspace key is horrible. The mouse is an unusual design but it feels pretty good. The backspace key on this keyboard is horrible, a little tiny key in the wrong place. Logitech keyboards are much better laid out. Off to do something, mail later. While I am not as happy with the Belkin keyboard layout as I am with Logitech's, I like everything else about this Belkin wireless keyboard/mouse setup.

Down at the beach trying to do fiction. Continuing to use the Belkin wireless keyboad, which works very well, but I don't think I will ever get used to the placement of that tiny backspace key.

March 21, 2004 Happy Vernal Equinox Three hundred seventy four mail messages on one account alone. I suppose 20 are not spam. I don't much notice that at home but on a dialup it is horrible. Is there anything too horrible for a spammer? WORM WARNING, see mail

I'm at a very low speed connection without a printer so I have no chance to look in detail today, but I will when I get home. My thanks to you for finding this and to Mr. King for all his work. More on this another time.
