This is a day book. It's not all that well edited. I try to keep this up daily, but sometimes I can't. I'll keep trying. See also the monthly COMPUTING AT CHAOS MANOR column, 4,000 - 7,000 words, depending. (Older columns here.) For more on what this page is about, please go to the VIEW PAGE. Epiphany It is column time and I was laid out all weekend with something I am not able to shake. Phillip's ship leaves for points West (or East, depending on your location); it's part of the squadron led by the USS Tarawa. Godspeed.

I am laid low and the column is due. This is not one of my best days.

I am sufficiently recovered that I was able to go with Sable for her first walk around the block. Not really the first, since we did this much earlier, but she won't really remember that. She is now past her shots and officially ready to go meet the world, although she can't go to a dog park or get a license for another couple of weeks and her rabies shot. I was beginning to think I had walking pneumonia, but apparently not; but this is the worst cold/bronchitis I recall for a decade (and the last one this bad did turn into walking pneumonia). I'll be pounding on the column most of the day. Those concerned about the future of The Lord Of The Rings should look here: http://www.bbspot.com/News/2003/01/jaromir.html

Thursday,
January 9, 2003 Well I am back from my nuclear medicine stint and the treadmill test. Don't know results yet, but should know soon. Feel all right, recovering from this rather horrid cold and whatever else it was, head still stopped up a bit. Sable gets to go on walks now, which is neat. It tires her out and gives us exercise. Of course now that she knows there's a world out there she is forever bugging us to take her out to see it, but that's what we hired her for... I still have a pile of administrative stuff to do, then I can get to work on Burning Tower, and then Janissaries. And I owe you all an essay on the state of the republic, but that may take a few days. Being laid out for a week leaves a lot of work piled up. I'm just now catching up with some of the mail from a week ago. Thanks to everyone for caring, and for the kind notes. More later. For a number of articles about Lomberg and The Skeptical Environmentalist, see http://www.techcentralstation.com/ It's sort of astonishing, but I guess there's just too much money at stake for science to be scientific... or? See mail.

Friday,
January 11, 2003 I am still racing around trying to catch up. Thanks to Mr. St. Onge, we have had what I think is a reasonably thorough discussion of my foreign policy views. The thread began when I posted my thoughts on what we should be doing. I have attempted to add all the links along the thread so that it makes one long and reasonably coherent discussion. It begins here. And continues through several exchanges with Mr. St. Onge. I believe I have adequately marked the thread. If not, someone can advise me. I have a number of errands to do today, and I am still recovering from a bronchitis that seems to be current in Los Angeles. The place is a mess. The good news is that I don't have a heart condition, the column is in, and I am caught up on essentials. Now to get BURNING TOWER out the door. REQUEST FOR HELP: Does anyone have an old 4 or 8 megabyte SmartCard they'd sell or donate? My Dragon Naturally Speaking recorder won't take anything larger, and I have had problems finding anything smaller than 16 or 32 Megabytes. 8 megabytes is the largest this will take, and I could use a couple of those if there are any available.
(DONE! Thanks! to PJ Meyer and David Plunkett I have what I needed.) Blogging: I keep reading about "blogging software." I don't find the word "blog" very attractive, but apparently there are software tools that make it easier to control threads and searches, and I haven't been following them.

January 11, 2003 I suppose I have to accept the "blog" title. Ah well, I still find the word rather ugly.

This week: | Sunday,
January 12, 2003 Tomorrow I'll go to the physicians. This cold, while a lot better, is hanging on far too long. There is considerable matter about The Skeptical Environmentalist over in Mail. The discussion continues there a second day.
