Last Week's View Next Week's View This is a day book. It's not all that well edited. I try to keep this up daily, but sometimes I can't. I'll keep trying. See also the monthly COMPUTING AT CHAOS MANOR column, 4,000 - 7,000 words, depending. (Older columns here.) For more on what this place is about, please go to the VIEW PAGE. I am trying to build an old clunky Windows 95 machine with precisely 32 MB of memory. You would not suppose how difficult that is. The story will be in the column. A comedy of errors. In contrast I have built a Windows 2000 Pro using nVIDIA Ge-force 2 video board and an Intel motherboard and Intel 1 GHz Pentium III in about an hour including software installation. And THAT works wonderfully. ALL upcoming in the column. Stay tuned.

Column time. I am getting desperate. This will be an all nighter I fear. Don't try to build an ancient machine!! Reports that commercial applications using Athlon are having problems with general failures. I have had my Athlon running since December without difficulties, but it has a LOT of cooling in it, and a very hefty power supply. This will be in the column, but if you are going Athlon, COOL it and OVERPOWER it. Those suckers draw lots of power and put out lots of heat. More Fry's adventures. Why not? And I can't get Windows 95 to install. I have forgotten how? I am beginning to remember why people hate Microsoft

7, 2001 Column deadline. Problems with finding a standalone version of an Internet Explorer later than 3; read the column for details. Bob Thompson seems to have solved THAT particular problem. It's easier every moment to remember why people got in the habit of hating Microsoft... When you upgrade Windows 95 (again see the column for details on why I'd want THAT) you get a several hour download to upgrade Internet Explorer, but what you don't seem to get is a standalone installable you can put on other machines. There's probably a way to download that, but I sure can't find it. Oh well. There are ways around that. And in fact things are working well and if they would just put another couple of hours in the day I'd be fine. The irony is that I built and set up a 1 GHz machine with fancy graphics and Windows Professional 2000 in about an hour. I was two days getting a new Windows 95 machine up and running. Sigh. And I have this and, well >I just found a program 'bindmon' at http://www.m-tech.ab.ca which >watches ports and restarts named with a rewritten zone file when >a port goes down (or back up). It looks interesting, but I >don't quite have it working. So far it thinks my mail servers >are all down, even though they are still working. > >It might be because I am running it under SOlaris and it was >designed/tested with linux. > I don't know where I got it. Anyone have experience?

February 9, 2001 It's done. Now to clean up some of the debris. And do an essay. On something... There's a lot of mail to clean up, too. Breakfast first. Then a haircut. Illustrations for the column. Paying the bills. Work work work Note this article. It's pretty good: http://www.wired.com/news/business/0,1367,41435,00.html

February 10, 2001 Review of next year's opera season at the Peterson Automotive Museum today. Cleaning up from column. AAAS Meeting next week. I will be doing a report, and one special essay for subscribers. Since I'll be in San Francisco with a laptop I will not likely mail the report until I get back home. I can do minimal updates to this page while I am up there.
