June 9, 2008 The June Column will be up tonight. I have the copy edited ms. of Escape From Hell and a short deadline; and the format of the book, with included quotations and maps and viewpoint changes, is tricky and will take some work on my part to get it right. Niven is working on it too. Over in Mail I have written about the Intelligent Design debate as it relates to of all things Global Warming Denial. You may find that interesting. Also, Mike Flynn adds something to the actual substance of the debate. If you run out of things to look at, I ran across my Death Valley Adventure while looking for something else. It's astonishing just what you can find in this place. ========= And something to think about:
This is likely to lead to a constitutional crisis in Turkey; and I fear that neither Bush, McCain, or Obama will think about it in the right way. I worry. ========== He was an 0ld friend. I first met him in 1961, and while I never knew him as quite as close a friend as the others I met then -- Poul, Gordie, Ted, and the rest of the Old Guard -- I knew him well enough to call him a friend, and we had mutual respect. He hadn't written much lately, and I was engaged in a campaign to bully him into writing again. one more book! But I couldn't get him started. I will have more to say another time. I am sure there will be lengthy biographies in many places. We have lost one of the best in our field. =========== Subject: Gag me http://www.kansascity.com/105/story/654147.html Steve Chu The victim is forbidden to say she was raped. I would not wish it on her, and I do not blame her for not doing it, but this is one judicial order that ought to have been defied; any sanction that contemptible judge imposed for contempt of court would be laughed away on appeal, and probably earned His "Honor" a pointed reprimand. Life in these United States... ==============

Yesterday in mail I left off the link to my megamissions paper. 1520: Not a good day. I think I have a cold because I have a sore throat and muscles ache all over and I spent the whole morning in bed with the covers pulled up. I have the copy edited ms. for Escape From Hell, and I have done 140 pages out of 400 or so. That will eat most of my time.
I sure hope I have a cold or it's the allergies, because I would hate to think this is a symptom. I have spent the day in bed, and I'll probably head back there.

11, 2008 1545 Worst day of the week, maybe in a year. Head stopped up. Can't breathe. Aches all over. Chills, shivering, teeth chattering.

June 12, 2008 It's good to be back in the land of the living. Yesterday was horrible. I spent the day in bed, which I thought would mean an awful night, but although I woke up every hour -- and at Roberta's insistence, had a glass of water each time -- it wasn't bad at all. The chills went away about midnight, and by morning, while I still wanted to go back to bed, I felt like I was recovering. I'm pretty sure this is an awful cold. I sure hope it has nothing to do with radiation recovery. Now it's back to that copy-edited manuscript. I only got 20 pages done yesterday. ==================== "Neurofeedback" training works better than Ritalin http://www.mercurynews.com/news/ci_9560783 "12-year-old Ryan was having trouble paying attention to the home-school tasks his mother, Cindy Withers of San Jose, set for him. Determined to avoid drugs such as Ritalin, Withers opted for brain-training instead. At his psychologist's office, Ryan's treatment included specialized video games that responded to his brain waves. By remaining focused, the boy was able to propel digital spaceships or race cars. His mother says the therapy gave him a "can-do" attitude and improved his school work." So here's the AMAZING CONCLUSION: Turns out that teaching your kids to pay attention works better than drugging them into submission. Amazing! -- Mike T. Powers Not unexpected; perhaps some will pay attention. We do not need another generation of drugged boys. =========== Subject: Newt's Oil Drilling Petition http://www.americansolutions.com/ Julie Drill here, drill now, pay less. Increase supply when demand rises. Astonishing. ================== And they have apparently discovered that the old school house education system can work. Astonishing.

Friday the 13th I spent the day in bed, or nearly so. I have an appointment with my doctors on Monday. I suspect I have pneumonia.

14, 2008 Happy Birthday Roberta I was supposed to go down to Irvine for Dan Spisak's graduation, but I wasn't up to it. I did manage to get up and get dressed, but I didn't do much else. Apologies. I have a medical appointment Monday and we'll see. It feels much like it did when I had pneumonia. I'll try to catch up. More apologies.

June 15, 2008 Happy Father's Day Well, I'm up. I'm pretty sure this is pneumonia. At least I am done with the ms. for Escape From Hell. Now all I need is to get Niven's work and put that with mine and get it to the publisher. ===================== Saw three of the boys, and had phone calls from Phil and Jenny, so it was a good day familywise even if I wasn't much for company. Tomorrow I go to the doctor. With luck I'll find out I have pneumonia, which now seems pretty probable, and anti-biotics will make all this temporary, which will be a Good Thing, and I can start making sense again. ============ For those who might be tempted by this, here's the real skinny...

========================= Monday June 16 Niven was over and we are mailing off the copy edited ms. of Escape From Hell (Inferno II)
I am off to the doctors. I'll take care of this site when I get back.
This is a day book. It's not all that well edited. I try to keep this up daily, but sometimes I can't. I'll keep trying. See also the weekly COMPUTING AT CHAOS MANOR column, 8,000 - 12,000 words, depending. (Older columns here.) For more on what this page is about, please go to the VIEW PAGE. If you have never read the explanatory material on that page, please do so. If you got here through a link that didn't take you to the front page of this site, click here for a better explanation of what we're trying to do here. This site is run on the "public radio" model; see below. If you have no idea what you are doing here, see the What is this place?, which tries to make order of chaos.
