PC EXPO 2001
Jerry Pournelle
PC EXPO is New York, and vice versa. The view from my hotel is spectacular. That's the Javits Center looking like an Aztec Temple down by the river. We'll be seeing a lot of it. Then we have the souks of 34th Street. And the original Post Office building that sported the motto about faithful courriers...
I pass this every year going to PC EXPO: the site of Nero Wolfe's brownstone. It's long gone, but across the street is a building that looks much like his must have looked. Then to the Javits center. David Em and Eric Lilley in front of the Aztec Temple otherwise known as Javits Center. At least the losers in the games in there don't have to provide lunch. Or not be the lunch...
Digital Focus/Mobile Focus, and a sight you would see only in New York. John Dvorak reacts accordingly. And it's still true that the best way to get attention for a product is to have a bright and pretty girl demonstrate it...
There are many products at these shows. I carry the MobilePro 780 which got my Cold Dead Fingers award last year. This is the 790 which is said to be an improvement. I hope so but the 780 is Good Enough.
And we close with the best technology so far: 802.11a 54mbs wireless transmission, streaming video both directions -- and cheap.
It's an interesting show, mostly things are better, faster, more reliable -- and cheaper.
