DRAGONCON IMAGES

Atlanta, September 3-6, 1998

DragonCon is a regular event, usually held in July. The Atlanta Committee had originally bid to host the World Science Fiction Convention, which is actually a smaller convention than DragonCon but is held on Labor Day Weekend, so the DragonCon people reserved hotels for September. Then the Worldcon bid was won by Baltimore, which turned out not to have negotiated a real deal with their hotels, so they held the WorldCon in early August. I didn't go, and many others didn't due to not being able to get confirmed hotel space.

So DragonCon, larger than WorldCon, was held in the WorldCon time slot, and they invited a number of science fiction people as guests of honor. Among them were me, Niven, Harlan Ellison, Ray Bradbury, Julie Schwartz, Forrest J. Ackerman, and I'm sure a number of others. Anyway, at the banquet Roberta and I found ourselves seated with Harland Susan, Larry, Julie, and Ray, and I got a few pictures there. I wasn't at DragonCon to take pictures so I didn't get all that many. Someone has asked about Mrs. Niven. Larry and Marilyn recently moved into a new house, and she preferred to stay home and see to furniture arrangements, unpacking, and all those details of running their lives.

I did not get a good picture or Roberta at Dragoncon, but she did get to autograph a couple of her articles. And I got some great pictures at the opera which I will try to get up Real Soon Now.

Larry Niven, Ray Bradbury, and Susan Ellison. That's Harlan with his back to us. The award is to Harlan for championing freedom of speech.

Harlan congratulates Julie Schwartz and wonders how he'll get his lifetime achievement award home… Julie looks just a bit dismayed. Julie was one of the founders of Superman Comics, and has been associated with science fiction since he was an agent for Cthulu.

Ray Bradbury with his award. That's Niven on the right.

Harlan and Susan

Not all that good a shot of Niven, but it's the best one I got. Up on stage Harlan is presenting Julie with his lifetime achievement award.

God only knows what the Klingons have found this time.
