his voice of reason will be missed. his works will live on!
I am very thankful that I ran into his site. it made an author feel more like a friend.
my deepest condolences.
His books meant a lot to me. I read them, and re-read them. Very sorry for your loss.
The world has suddenly become a darker place. I have been a fan of Dr. Pournelle’s for decades and will miss his intelligence and wit immensely. My most sincere condolences to his wonderful family.
Requiem eternam dona ei, Domine,

Roberta, Alex, Phil, Rich, Jennifer (and my apologies if I left anyone out), plus Larry and Marilyn and Jerry’s other family and close friends.
It has been my privilege and honor to be one of Jerry’s frequent science and political correspondents over the past fifteen or so years, and to have met him several times, including the wonderful afternoon he gave me a tour of Chaos Manor and a walk through your neighborhood.
He will be sorely missed my me and by countless others. May God bless and keep you during this time of grief, and grace you with good health until the time you get to see him again.
God bless you all,
Jim Woosley
I “met” Jerry in BYTE in 1981. Chaos Manor became the place I turned first. Several of us still use Jerry-isms, such as “Too smart by half”, and “we do these things so you won’t have to”. Blessings, Jerry, and to all the Pournelles.
I have enjoyed Mr. Pournelle’s writings for 40 years. He was/is incredibly brilliant.
He will be missed.
Celebrate a life well lived.
I am very sorry to hear this news. I have always enjoyed his books, his columns, and lately his musings on this page.
All the best to Mrs Pournelle, and his children.
Always a gentleman, and did his best. He will be missed.
For more than thirty years I called Jerry Pournelle a friend. He was a craftsman of words and ideas, Korean War veteran, was in the space program before Mercury and computers before languages, my favorite author long before I met him, and I shall miss him. RIP.
I’m very sorry to hear of Dr. Pournelle’s passing. He was an icon of his age, and will never be replaced. May he rest in peace.
Sorry to hear about the stroke. I hope the wheelchair is temporary.
Your “Rods From GOD” work made the “National Enquirer” Sept 11, 2017, P.20.
I never liked blaming FREON for the (Winter) Polar Ozone Hole. (Freon is HEAVIER than air.) And why don’t polar bears and penguins get skin cancer from the UV?
Answer: Its Winter and the long polar night when the pole is tilted 23.5 degrees AWAY from the sun and the polar ozone layer is in the Earth’s shadow. Ozone doesn’t stop UV- UV makes ozone.
Dr. Pournelle,
I wish you and Mrs. Pournelle the best of health. I’ve read your works off and on since the Byte days. I’m always glad when I come back to Chaos Manor and find you still proffering a common sense view of world events – and space.
I’ve been a science fiction fan since discovering Robert Silverberg’s “Downward to the Earth” in the middle school library. That lead to Asimov and Heinlein; and eventually Niven and Pournelle. I still hope to see some of your works in movie form.
All the Best,
Don
Jerry, get back to work! We still need that 4th Janissaries book.
Rest easy and work hard at being well, brother. Oh, yeah. Hillary Clinton will never be President.
Dear Jerry, I have been a fan of your Chaos Manor writings since your first writing in Byte in 1980. Being 13 years old at that time. ๐
Later, I started reading your books (together with Larry Niven), and became a great fan. Your writings gave me a lot of enjoyment, and a few important insights into the life, the universe and everything.
I was sorry to read about your stroke. So I wanted to take this opportunity to wish you a great recovery, and hope that you will keep up the motivation to have your unique outlook in write your books. I hope I can enjoy them for some time to come.
But I also hope that you will enjoy writing for some time to come. Don’t let the intended destination cloud your enjoyment of the ride!
I’ve never had the pleasure of meeting you, Dr. but I got to spend a few moments with your partner in crime, Niven. I would have loved yo have met you as well.
As one who is a stroke survivor myself – two in an afternoon but fairly minor – I can understand your feeling of frustration. My strokes fortunately did not hit in any morot areas – just speech center and sensorium. I still have bouts of anomic aphasia. All I can say is hang in there. It will get better. And for goodness sake, make sure the medicos figure out where/how the clot formed and do what’s necessary to prevent more!
Now, When are you and that Niven fellow going to write a sequel to “Hammer”? The field could use your take on post apocalypse life. Of course you could also write about race relations in a sequel to “Footfall”.
You, my good sir, are a treasure. I am glad you are still with us.
The world would be a better place if we had more people like you in it.
Sincerest wishes for your continued recovery and for the good health of you and all of your loved ones.
– Robert Elfers
Hope you are recovering as well as possible.
Discovered your Falkenbergs Legion series a few months ago and having a really good time crunching through them all.
Hope to one day be able to do a licensed game on the Codominium Universe ๐
Best wishes, Vic
