I first met Jerry in the late 1980s at an Army technology conference in Europe. We remained friends and correspondents for the last 30 or so years. My life was, and is better for knowing him. Condolences to Roberta and his family.

I discovered Dr. Pournell via his Byte column in BYTE magazine in the 80’s. Always an interesting read. Then I discovered his novels and enjoyed them immensely.

Condoleances to the family, it’s the end of an era and he will be missed.

  7. Dave Porter says:

My deepest condolences to Dr Pournelle’s family and friends.
I discovered Jerry through his fiction, and only later realized his staggeringly great contributions in other fields.
Based on Project 75, Strategy of Technology, and The Citizens Advisory Council on Space Policy paper, it is my considered opinion that Jerry Pournelle won the Cold War.
I didn’t get around to reading A Step Farther Out until 2005, and I wept at the end for the two and a half decades of lost opportunity.
Godspeed Jerry, you will be missed.

  8. Doug & Carrie says:

Husband, father, Author, inspiration and friend to millions who never met him in person. Not a bad legacy, and yet it feels much too soon.

He will be missed by all. Our thoughts and prayers to those who will miss him most.

    Godspeed Jerry

  9. Rod Davenport says:

Saddened to hear of Dr. Pournelle’s passing. I enjoyed his work for many years, both in Byte magazine as well as the Chaos Manor postings. Condolences to his friends and family.

  10. Victor Liimatainen says:

I started reading Jerry’s columns in Byte magazine in 1980. My first computer was an Apple II+ clone which I built. After IBM’s PC was released to market I decided to learn all about them. Reading Jerry’s chronicles in Byte I learned a lot. As an avid reader of sci-fi, I made sure I did not miss any of his books as they were released.

Condolences to the family. He will be missed.

  11. Will Ganz says:

My sincere condolences to his family for this loss. From BYTE magazine to today, I admired him for his energy, drive, and willingness to admit he, also, had a feet of clay when divining the intricacies of modern technology.

    Until we all meet again.

  12. Ralph Siegler says:

To Jerry Pournelle’s family and friends, I’m very sorry for your loss. Since a teen I was a reader of Jerry’s Chaos Manor and his science fiction works; he was a major contributor to my love of engineering and science, and the philosophical matters entwined with them.

  13. Glenn Joseph says:

Absolutely saddened to hear of his passing. I discovered him through his fiction, and years later discovered him all over again in his political and social commentaries and observations. What an amazing and gifted man we were fortunate enough to have walk amongst us for a time.
I feel as if our very own, “Duke of San Joaquin”, has passed.

My heartfelt condolences to his family and friends.

  14. Ben Barlow says:

I had a subscription to Byte Magazine, but would often go to the newsstand and buy the new issue to read Jerry’s column because it came out there before my copy arrived in the mail.

My friends and I would read, share, and discuss his many books. A few years ago I was happy to discover Chaos Manor on the net and reconnect with a favorite author.

My condolences to his family, and thanks to Dr. Pournelle, whom I never met, but who will always be Jerry.

  15. Janice Jacobson says:

I’m very sorry to learn of Mr. Pournelle’s passing. My condolences to his family, friends and all who knew him only by his writings.

I used to go to local science fiction conventions back in the day, when the writers were the stars, and I often saw him. Sometimes he was on the panel, other times he would be standing in the aisle, glass in hand, making forceful but cogent cracks at the panel. He always added to things whenever he was there.

    Hail and farewell, sir.

  16. Calvin Yockey says:

Loved reading his column in the early days of the pc revolution. Would have loved to have had his job, but he was so much more eloquent than I could could ever be. Loved his SciFi as well. A national treasure has passed. I was a super fan.

  17. Jacek says:

Sending my sincere condolences to the family, and all of his friends – all over the world.

I for one, had the pleasure of uncovering Dr. Pournelle’s witty, insightful, funny (and at times sprinkled with sarcasm) musings through BYTE magazine. I relished reading his adventures, and learning from them.

    Thank you for those memories!

  18. Jose Tenembaum says:

Dr. Pournelle was a great man. His writing was among the most important works of literature that influenced me growing up.

Condolences to his family and I and my friends will hoist a cup in remembrance.

  19. Rick says:

I began reading Chaos Manor in high school back in the early 80’s. In college in 1983 I had access to Arpanet and managed to speak to him over Usenet (he was one of the rare early users with access). I respected him as a science fiction writer but he was most compelling to me as the first technology writer I ever cared about. Being able to tell a good story about anything, everything and nothing made him a compelling read for decades. Godspeed Jerry.

  20. Matthew Clark says:

I am so sorry to hear of Dr. Pournelle’s passing. I have read most of his books over the years, including all that were written with Larry Niven. The world is a better place because of his contributions. My condolences to his family.
