My deepest thanks for everything Jerry – your writing inspired me as a youth, and continued to do so in my adulthood. I met you 30-odd years back at WesterCon in Phoenix, and that was truly a talk to remember.

The world is a smaller and less interesting place now. Farewell!

  2. Tim Bolgeo says:

I will miss Jerry more than most people will realize. We where both Brother’s Boys from Memphis and that gave us a very great bond over the years. He always had a good word for me when I had problems and checked in on me when he thought I needed a little moral support. I will miss my friend of many years and the world is a poorer place without him. Roberta and Alex, my deepest sympathy goes out to you in your time of need. Jerry is with the angels now and in a better place.

  3. Charles Adams says:

    To Jerry’s kith and kin,

He directly influenced the trajectory of my life through his student, Dr. William B Allen who taught me at Harvey Mudd College.

Jerry was a dose of sanity in these “Crazy Years.”

    I shall miss him.

My thoughts and prayers are with you all.

  4. Chuck Bogardus says:

A long time ago, in the days of slow modems, I had the privilege of chatting a time or three… One of the truly nice guys, and very tolerant of those of us who thought that we could hack the world.

  5. Evan Ladouceur says:

I am stunned and saddened. Jerry Pournelle brought me a lot a enjoyment. My condolences to the family.

  6. Bert Powers says:

He will be greatly missed by myself and others who were educated and enlightened by his work

  7. Mark D. says:

My condolences to Dr. Pournelle’s family. His writings, in whatever form, have consistently made me and many think and given us a better understanding of the world.

This ae nighte, this ae nighte,

I read his books, I read his reviews, I read his columns, while my personality and his wildly diverged I enjoyed his work and talents. He will be (and is) missed.

Bruce Pelz told me that Jerry should have long since been a Worldcon Goh. I’m sorry I missed that Worldcon for him.

  9. Rob Phipps says:

Thanks for everything. I will miss being able to come here and find a rational approach to the crazy world. My condolences to the Pournelle family.

  10. Gerry O'Brien says:

I had the pleasure of speaking with Jerry by phone back in the 1980s when I was involved in the L5 Society. He was brilliant, generous, and immensely talented.

Deepest condolences to his family and friends.

  11. James Steelman says:

Thank you, Mr. Pournelle, for the many wonderful hours I spent reading your stories. Though I am sad that you will no longer be posting your current thoughts on Chaos Manner, I wanted to let you know that I have been sharing you with my children for several years, and I am sure I will with theirs in the future. Consequently I know you will continue to speak and enrich in the years to come as you have in those past. The world is a better place for you having added to it, and I will be forever grateful to you for the large role you played in my life. Fare well on your travels until we meet again.

  12. Michael Walters says:

My condolences to Dr. Pournelle’s family. I enjoyed reading everything he wrote for many years. He will be greatly missed. I am deeply saddened by the news of his passing.

  13. Joe Hennessey says:

“Mavrone, mavrone! the man has died.” It has been over 30 years since we were together on BIX, and Jerry has been a source of knowledge and wise counsel ever since. Now that I’m heading into old age, he has shown me how to cope with the bad parts of that, persevere, and remain productive. He was a man for all seasons. I shall be poorer for his absence — as will the nation.

  14. SDN says:

Condolences to Dr Pournelle’s family. I had the honor of meeting him at a number of conventions, and I learned far more than him than he ever did from me.

  15. Adam Di Gleria says:

I had just read yesterdays Chaos Manor update earlier today, then I saw this on instapundit.com.

I met Mr. Pournelle back somewhere around 1983 at a convention at Western Washington university. Argued with him about gun control (I was young) and had the absolute privilege to talk to him about Oath of Fealty and the upcoming Footfall. I will always treasure that memory.

I will miss him. He will be missed.

  16. Miles says:

    Condolences! Thank you for the
    legacy of works

  17. MattN says:

Nothing to add others have not said. Another “life-long” follower of Dr. Pournelle here, both in books and articles and on-line. He’s been part of my life since I was 11 years old or so, and that was over 40 years ago. My condolences to the family, friends, and all of us who’s lives he touched. RIP.

  18. erica says:

I discovered Jerry Pournelle late in my life, but that’s better than never having discovered him at all.

To his family and dear friends, may your grief be replaced soon by all your memories of an exceptional man who made a difference in the world.

  19. Julian thompson says:

My condolences. I really loved his work.

  20. Joseph Neumayer says:

My deepest condolences to Mrs Pournelle and the rest of the family at Dr Pournelle’s passing. Having corresponded with him via BIX and this blog for more than 25 years, I feel your loss directly. We are all, family, friends, and the world, very much lesser for his passing.

I am somehow reminded of Grand Admiral Sergei Lermontov’s passing in Jerry’s CoDominium series – how the characters all felt a keen loss at his guidance no longer being their for them.

    That is me today.

Godspeed Dr Pournelle. We’ll keep the faith and we will not despair.
