This is a day book. It's not all that well edited. I try to keep this up daily, but sometimes I can't. I'll keep trying. See also the monthly COMPUTING AT CHAOS MANOR column, 4,000 - 7,000 words, depending. (Older columns here.) For more on what this place is about, please go to the VIEW PAGE. If you are not paying for this place, click here... For Previous Weeks of the View, SEE VIEW HOME PAGE Search: type in string and press return.

For an index
of previous pages of view, see VIEWDEX. See also the New Order page, which tries to make order of chaos. These will be useful. For the rest, see What is this place? for some details on where you have got to.

This week: | Monday
May 1, 2000
Mayday. I am in Paris watching CNN show riots as bored Londoners attack McDonalds. In Paris the Communists have a big block party, and most of those attending wear Izod and New Balance and rather fashionable and expensive clothing sold by the international cartels they are drinking to the destruction of. It's all very French...

This week: | Tuesday,
Still in Paris.

This week: |
Wednesday,
Long walk in Paris. Notre Dame, other tourist stuff. La Traviata at the Bastille Opera tonight. The LA Opera company arranged our tickets, which were good, but finding them wasn't easy. Turned out the simplest was best. No lines to stand in, this after we'd been sent to stand in a line. Fortunately I figured it out eventually.

This week: |
Thursday,
May 4, 2000 Got home at about 7 PM. Adventures. Fireball, a Dual Pentium, when started up has only one CPU working. NT 4 cannot stand that and won't open. Got Roland over to help. Temporary expedients in place. I'll build a new main server.

This week: |
Friday,
May 5, 2000 Operating without a main server, using another as a temp. We will fix all that and rationalize shortly. It's time to have a main server, a backup server, and yet another place to store data. Time to build new machines. Fun. It's column time. I was on an airplane during the I LOVE YOU virus. Thanks to the dozens of you who sent messages of warning. I'll probably do a special on this for BYTE shortly. My thanks to Bob Thompson for looking out for me while I was gone. Lots more later. I cannot vouch for its truth, but those interested in free government should see http://www.newsmax.com/articles/?a=2000/4/30/155105 And if anyone with expertise has comments I would welcome them.

This week: | Sunday,
May 7, 2000 We're back, and the column is due. I should come up for air shortly... 8:45 PM : I'm almost done with the column and I seem to be coming down with a cold. I often get a cold after being on an airplane. I hope that's all it is.
Once the column is done I have a couple of pictures from my granddaughter's christening I intend to inflict on you.
And you might want to look at: http://biz.yahoo.com/prnews/000507/ny_newswee_1.html which is a fascinating account of just what we didn't do in the Balkan Bombardment.
